Alphabet Animals, by Auryn Inc, is a delightful new app-book from the Caldecott Honree, Suse MacDonald‘s book. Teachers With Apps has a special place in their heart for ABC books and this one does not disappoint. It combines the feature of a pop up book with its slide to see feature. You simply ‘pull the card’ to reveal the letter and make the animal move, and tap the image to hear the animal and letter name. The illustrations are clever and drop dead gorgeous. The premise of the book is straightforward – expose little ones to the alphabet and to animals that have the same corresponding beginning letter, all while having a cheeky time! Our favorite part is the Alphabet Game that is included where words are written and then the appropriate animal is pulled down to replace the letter, making an artsy representation of the word.
▶ EXTEND THE LEARNING! ASK YOUR CHILD:
– What is the color of and Alligator, tiger, horse, etc
– To write various names in the “Game” section and match the animal shape to the letters.
Teachers With Apps also recommends to always extend learning through questions and discussions whenever possible and applicable to an app. Suse MacDonald, the illustrator, often encourages her readers to go beyond the usual stopping points.
This app exposes children to the ABC’s and helps build vocabulary. Although a few of the animals featured are far from the norm, (the letter X is for a bird called xenops and the letter U is for unicorn) it doesn’t disrupt the flow of the book. Animal Alphabet by Auryn is a great jumping off point for early introduction to the alphabet. With bright colors and the use of a bold font, surprise pop-out feature, and giving the letter itself a full page, this is perfect for toddlers.
