Doodle Critter Math: Shapes, by NCSOFT, is SENSATIONAL! How do we know? We had the pleasure of spending several days with some preschoolers and they were smitten! No matter how hard we tried to introduce new apps they returned and returned and returned to Doodle Critter Math: Shapes. Now, we know kids like repetition and routine, but this was getting ridiculous, as we have other preschool/toddler apps on the table to review.
This delightful, adorable, and intuitive app screams teacher tool. It is the perfect example of reinforcing concepts through play, combining a gorgeous setting and exploratory play. This may not necessarily be what is considered a game, but the experience for youngsters is golden. Doodle Critter takes advantage of the screen with a plethora of gorgeous textures that all call out “touch me”. A whole lot more learning is going on besides shape recognition, sorting, color, counting, texture and mathing, just to name just a few skills constatnly reinforced with subtle rewards from the Critters. Another aspect of learning is the opportunity to discuss the world around us and build vocabulary, as well as background knowledge. This app has raised the bar and is an example for all educational apps to come!
