Look, it’s a book, it’s an app… no, it’s K.I.W.i. STORYBOOKS™ (Kids Interactive Walk-in Storybooks) by Calapitter Creations! You need to see it in action to believe how revolutionary this new teaching tool is. And that’s just what we did. Along with Teachers With Apps reviewer and OT, Jo Booth, we attended the launch party and demonstration in NYC and got the whole story!
First let’s explain, this is an entirely new platform of combining books, apps, and life size story frames wherein children are actively involved in the learning experience through exploration, movement, and student team work. On top of that, there is a brilliant Reader’s Theater Plus! included for each storyboard.
Each app is cleverly paired with a visually stimulating panoramic walk-in book, inspiring kids to discover the wide world around them. Use this combo as a launching pad to implement critical thinking skills, communication, collaboration and creativity into the curriculum.
This joint collaboration began with Connie Melashenko and her brainchild, which sprung from her four year old daughter’s play patterns. So, what’s the best way to bring your great idea to life? Collaborate with the best of the best! Connie’s first task was to contact Roxie Munro, renowned children’s book author/illustrator, back in the day when you called an operator to find a phone number! Next, she boldly called playwright Douglas Love to do the writing, and lastly added the great and wonderful OCG Studio team to develop the eleven apps to correlate and interact with the eleven different walk-in storybook background scenes.
K.I.W.i. STORYBOOKS™ begins with carefully researched backdrop environments, sized perfectly for kids; all beautifully illustrated with incredible detail by Roxie Munro. Roxie is the author/illustrator of more than 35 children’s books, as well as four apps before this major project! Each backdrop comes with curriculum written by playwright Douglas Love, called Reader’s Theater Plus! which encouraging kids to read, role-play, and creatively think their way through standards-based lessons in core academic subjects. Douglas’s unique approach to teaching core curriculum through the arts has led him to develop the largest arts education program in the world — utilized in more than 23 countries… Douglas has written original plays and standards-based lessons for all K.I.W.i. STORYBOOKS™ themes. Kids LOVE the accompanying Reader’s Theater Plus! which takes things to a whole other level. What educational tool today would be complete without technology? Hence, OCG Studios developed an app, with five different features to accompany the curriculum, for each of the eleven stunning backdrops… with more coming. Kids strategically place QR markers on a backdrop, scan with an iPad and answer questions, solve puzzles, watch videos and create their very own movies as they interact within each scene. These uber talented developers’ mission to develop and design beautiful and interactive apps, has been mastered with every app they touch. Their passion is to work with innovative, crazy, and fun ideas.
All this adds up to an infinite amount of authentic learning experiences and endless FUN! This powerful combo implements the four Cs of 21st Century Education:*Critical Thinking Skills *Communication *Collaboration *Creativity
The backbone to this whole package of learning is based on Connie’s Melashenko’s patented panel frames, available in two sizes – 5×7 (three panels) or 5×14 (five panels) sizes. Connie’s concept (from decades ago) of creating a walk-in play/learn space came to fruition after years of envisioning these two-sided storybook backdrops when she brought her idea to this amazing group of people, each talented in their own right. Together, they have created this incredible multifaceted, extraordinary, learning experience for children of all ages. Bravo!
Each Storybook package includes:
