LinguaPix – Full, by Expressive Solutions, is a simple to use yet comprehensive language app that brings a variety of activities to the user for practicing expressive and receptive language skills. Users will enjoy the vibrant and excellent quality photos among fifteen built in categories within this application. Speech and language educators will appreciate the ability to collect and share scoring data as well as the customization to add additional categories.
Three areas of activity are offered; Flashcards, Matching and Pick or Spin. I was amazed by the options, which allow for differentiating the instruction for a specific user. As mentioned above fifteen categorical choices that give you the option to remove specific photos if needed. You will find many images within each category. For example, the animal category houses imagery of 63 animals. I was very impressed with the photos available under the travel and transportation category, images that depict traveling through the security area of an airport to checking in at a hotel desk to viewing a map. The photos are current and every user will be able to relate to the categories and pictures within!
This app is filled with choices for individualizing a users specific needs and goals; basic concepts, morphology, pronouns, increasing MLU, articles and more! Recording is another feature in this well thought out app. Scoring available for up to eight users for an activity.
Activities include Say It, Repeat It, Expand It and Describe It. Each of these activities is used for naming nouns and verbs. Collect scores for your user in each activity. The Describe It activity is very well thought out and there is a hierarchy for the WH questions; Who, What, Where, When, Why and How. There is the ability to choose which set of questions to use for a particular flashcard. One of the best features within this app is the ability to customize the targeted goals by just touching the individual user icon in the upper left corner; this amazing feature allows you to switch between goals or add additional goals to the activity.
3-4 word sentences
5-6 word sentences
Articles (a, an, the)
Basic Concepts (behind, down, in, etc)
Conjunctions (after, although)
Repeat compound/complex sentences
Repeat simple sentences
Matching paired cards consists of three levels of difficulty – 6 cards (easy), 12 (medium), 20 (hard), with say it or repeat it options. Say it asks a WH question “what is it?” to elicit a noun response or “what is he doing?” for an expressive response containing a verb. The repeat it selection offers a written and audio cue for practicing verbal expression. The settings can be adjusted to further customize the activity by turning off the audio cues. Just tap the cards to expose the image and begin an engaging language session.
Pick or Spin
This fun activity area gives the user more practice on naming nouns and verbs with a fun spin feature.
I was not surprised at the overall functionality and ease of use with this app by Expressive Solutions because ArtikPix – Full (also by this developer) is one of my most used and loved apps.
Bravo to Expressive Solutions for creating a well thought out app that targets both expressive and receptive language skills with a variety of activities with excellent graphics and high quality narration. I highly recommend this app for all age groups working on their language skills. There is a FREE version that is offered so that you can get an idea of the great features within this app. The FREE version comes with the Health and Safety category area.
