# Math Mathews – Outstanding App for Practicing Multiplication Facts

Math Mathews, by Kiupe, is an outstanding app for practicing multiplication facts. It offers a very engaging game that is sure to grip your student’s attention. The graphics are superb, the music is exciting (and can be turned off) and the outcome will be a multiplication master! There are no in-app purchases, which is a big, PLUS in my book.  It’s a fast paced game so it’s great that there is a practice area to fine-tune your skills. What’s different about this math app is there is a reading component that tells the story of Captain Mathews, a pirate turned octopus. So, hold on Mate, let’s explore the islands with Mathews and his crew, Celia and Carl, aboard the flying ship, the Hummingbird.

The first screen takes you to a menu where you can access all areas of the application.

• PLAY is where the game is played
• PRACTICE is where you can practice your math facts before taking on this game adventure
• DIARY is where you read about how Captain Mathews and his unfortunate circumstance.
• CREW is where you set up users (up to seven)
• NOTEBOOK is where the data is stored for your users.
• TREASURE ROOM is where your badges and treasure are displayed and also where you can unlock special treasure by having an errorless gameplay.
• INFORMATION gives you a brief overview of the game.

Enter the DIARY Section for the story behind the gameplay before you get started in the PLAY. I use this section during speech/language therapy to get some articulation and or language practice in and then let the PLAY be the reward for nice sound productions or retelling the story. One suggestion for an update would be to move the DIARY above the PLAY on the first screen because I believe a user is more likely to enter PLAY first before going into the DIARY for the story.

The PLAY area has three game options. Touching one of the islands accesses each one.

The Sacred Cave
on the Island of Takoga will take you to the river where you need to steer the crew around floating boxes. A multiplication problem will be displayed with multiple-choice answers. Touch the correct answer before the fuse runs out.

The Secret Temple on the Island of Hiring will take you to an old elevator that needs to be raised up before the boiling lava gets you! A number will be displayed and the idea is to create the multiplication table grid by moving the vertical and horizontal sliders to create the multiplication problem. The grid squares will be highlighted as the sliders are moved.

The Ancient Citadel on the Island Kariba will take you to the Hummingbird Ship flying over the river. But watch out for the TNT that is falling from above. Fill in the missing number to create the multiplication problem before the TNT hits you.
Wonderful is all I can say about this app. I highly recommend it for both speech and language therapy and learning multiplication facts.
