# Native Numbers – Number Sense is the Foundation of Math Competency

Native Numbers - Complete Number Sense Mastery Curriculum, by Native Brain, is a wonderful addition to the already saturated math app market! This game is on the money when it comes to providing a deeper understanding of number concepts and imperative math vocabulary, which is needed to build a strong foundation for all mathematics to follow.

Number Sense is the foundation of math competency and has been widely cited as one of the most critical early learning skills for young children.

As Native Brain mentions on their website, kids are capable of so much more if we give them the chance. We need to embrace this philosophy and raise the bar. Starting early is by far the best way to achieve this, research has shown over and over those children that have a solid and deep exposure to basic number concepts have the ability to learn and understand math skills later. Now kids can learn, understand, and master numbers natively.

Native Numbers, just released in October and already updated, gives early learners this type of solid introduction to numbers, as well as exposing them to much-needed concepts using a specific math vocabulary. TWA spent a week with severely limited students to experience this app to its fullest. We were wildly impressed with the progression of how and when new concepts are introduced. We loved witnessing the eureka moments when you could see light bulbs going off as the kids played away. I doubt the developers knew just how addicting the app would be. It is fast paced and repetitive and loads of fun!

Native Numbers develops an understanding of several core concepts and skills, including:

✭ Number Representations: Identify the numbers 1-9 as continuous quantities (rods), discrete quantities (sets of animals), and symbols (numerals)
✭ Number Relations: Answer questions about number relationships using a variety of visual representations and vocabulary (greater/less, bigger/smaller, heavier/lighter, etc.)
✭ Ordering: Arrange numbers in order from small to big and big to small
✭ Counting: Use numbers to put a set of objects in order (ordinal numbers) and to determine how many objects are in a set (cardinal numbers)
✭ Demonstrate Mastery: Apply concepts from previous activities to novel, untrained examples

The app starts by familiarizing kids with numbers in multiple representations (number rods, tallies, sets of animals, numerals, words, etc) – then it goes beyond awareness to help kids learn matching, relationships, order, and other core Number Sense concepts and skills. Finally, it presents these concepts in an engaging and increasingly paced manner that helps each child confidently progress from initial awareness to understanding, to native mastery.

Recommended Ages: 4-7.  Although both younger and older children can benefit from Native Numbers and it's great for the ESL population too. Native Numbers is a fabulous app, promoting deeper learning and providing a much-needed foundation in math for all children. We highly recommend this app and please, don't let the price stop you from purchasing this extensive curriculum, it's worth every penny of the \$9.99.
