Sums Stacker, by Daren Carstens of Carstens Studios Inc, is an amazing app. It incorporates critical thinking, problem solving, and strategic planning skills, all while you’re “playing” with math concepts with great gaming style! Carstens says this about math, “It wasn’t until after my school years, that I became a lover of math. I managed to get through all of those classes, text books, and homework assignments, without learning one of the most important math lessons of all – math is fun!”  This app challenges your reasoning, your number sense, your addition and subtraction facts, and your knowledge of coin values, and oh yes, reading, if you so desire.

The app gives the player (ps: many adults we’ve introduced to this app, love to play this game) a choice between dice, coins, fingers, money, written numbers, Roman numerals, both English and Spanish words, as well as a Question Mark for mixing it all up. The goal is to shift the groups around and around until the three columns displayed each add up to the target number, which is at the bottom of the screen. It automatically counts the number of tries it takes a player to succeed. Sums Stacker is simple to use, easy to change settings, and a challenge to play! We LOVE watching our students play this game— you can just see their wheels turning! There are several ways to play: SOLVE MODE, RACE MODE and EASY or HARD levels.

Sums Stacker is a brilliant educational app and, rightfully so, has won several awards. So, if you don’t have this math game yet – get it today!

I too love this app. It is a favorite in my 4th grade math inclusion class. To find an app that has true educational value, that is perfect for all student levels, and the students beg to “play,” is priceless. Even my 6th grade daughter and I have fun challenging each other. Thanks for your reviews, I always look for apps at this site.

I like your blog, and really like your detail about Sum Stackers. If you have time, please visit my blog and leave a comment or two. I am a middle school teacher, but you may find some things in common with your classroom. http://mrswaynesblog.wordpress.com/
