Caution: Due to the extreme joy that this app brings to the everyday SLP, you must remain seated at all times while reading this review and contain yourself from literally bouncing with excitement! I recently was lucky enough to trial the Sunny Articulation and Phonology Test by Smarty Ears. This app has spoiled me and it has changed the way I will complete both articulation screenings and evaluations! In fact, I have already used the screening mode to update end of the year IEP plans at my school site and stunned some private clients with comprehensive information following brief screening consults. All you need to enter is the client’s name and age, tweak a couple settings to suit your needs, and chose between a screening or full evaluation and you are ready to administer this baby!
One of the first things you’ll notice about this little gem is that it automatically calculates chronological age for you. But wait, there’s more! At the end of both screenings and evaluations, you get a comprehensive data summary with calculations for position, manner, voicing, and place, which can be emailed in report form to parents before you walk out the door! I have been using the screening form for private consults and caregivers are amazed with all the details I can provide after just a ten minute test! As an SLP, I also fully appreciate that the names for target pictures are already transcribed. Simply tap the color coded sound to indicate errors. The full evaluation even allows for further on the spot analysis for errors by displaying all the possible types, such as substitution. If you want to add more information, you can use the note link and/or configure the settings to allow you to record single sounds. Then there are all the other, little delights to the app like the actual, vibrant photo images and the rotation button that flips the transcribed word for the SLP’s viewing pleasure while clients look at the images. If you have any further questions, they can likely be answered by looking in the detailed manual via the app. All this for less than it costs to buy a traditional articulation test! How can you go wrong?
