We are very excited to share our BEST Baby/Toddler Apps of 2012! We asked our readers to submit their favorite apps for the baby/toddler set. Next, we got busy doing some serious field testing with children two and under. Once again, were amazed at the dexterity, the focus, and the definite preferences of this distinct age group. Some of the apps we had already reviewed, some have been in our que to review and a few are new to us.  TWA realizes that there are many, many wonderful apps designed specifically for the youngest iPad users. Unfortunately, we can’t cover them all but please enjoy this list that proved to be hottest with the tots.

Whether you are a grandparent, parent, teacher, caregiver, or just extremely young at heart, get out your iPad and get busy downloading!

The Peekaboo series has quite a few apps; Peekaboo Barn for iPad is the first in the series by Night and Day Studios and probably the best well know. In all, there are six Peekaboo apps in the series:  Peekaboo Barn, Peekaboo Forest, Peekaboo People, Peekaboo Wild, Peekaboo Presents (for the holidays), and Peekaboo Trick or Treat.  All are available in nine different languages.

Draw and Tell – by Duck Duck Moose supplies the creative outlet for the youngest iPad users. This will keep toddlers engaged and learning while they create their first masterpieces – without the mess! From Children’s Technology review, “exciting new creativity app for young children — the first to successfully mix a full featured drawing program with narration…. In the short history of children’s apps, Duck Duck Moose has more than its share of home runs, but this one is the most important.”  Tots will get their daily dose of creativity with this awesome app and you’ll know that they are in good company.

Pat the Bunny, by Random House Digital, Inc. – This app is a clever re-telling of the well-known children’s book by Dorothy Kunhardt. The color, style, and artwork are very similar to the book, and the gentle play that is encouraged also follows the original style. Toddlers will giggle with delight as they play hide and seek with Bunny, pop bubbles in the bathtub, make music in the kitchen, catch butterflies in the garden, and much more.

Plus, on devices with front-facing cameras, kids will be amazed to find they can “look in the mirror” and see their reflection smiling back at them. When TWA first looked at this app we were unsure if justice could be done to this classic on the iPad, but it didn’t take long for the tots to convince us otherwise.

The “Punky Dunk Project” is my 3-year-old’s current favorite. Super sweet and charming, she chooses this one for her bedtime story at least two nights out of the week. I like it too, so that’s two recommendations. Thanks, Punky!
