Mindfulness for Children – Meditations for kids by Jannik Holgersen has been designed to support parents and teachers to help their children learn the basics of meditation. Today’s world of sensory overload and over-scheduling of activities, constant nagging of school and home pressures, kids need meditation as much as adults. Meditation can help kids regulate their own emotions and learn how to pay attention inside and out. It gives them a sense of center and, therefore, resilience. This simple app can help kids to relax and will improve their ability to focus on the task at hand. Research shows that regular meditation, even just several minutes a day, has proven to help improve concentration, aid in memory retention, instill compassion and empathy and also be a boost to a child’s social and emotional well-being. With that said, sounds like it should be a mandatory few minutes a day to start with a progression of the length of time as one practices this art. Mindfulness for Children – Meditations for kids is a tool that can be used virtually anywhere that there is a calm environment without too much visual clutter. There is something to be said about introducing mediation at an early age, kids are usually in the here and now and can easily adapt to the rhythm if we provide the time. The App is also available on Google play store.
We used Mindfulness for Children with kids in a home setting, We found that the pillow was much easier for children to relax on than using a chair. The feedback from the kids was what we expected from a first-time meditator, “it was too long”. We would like to suggest that there be an introduction that is shorter and explains the rational in simple terms so that the child understands the reasoning behind the exercise. This app does contain wonderful text for a parent or teacher to share and ideas to initiate conversations surrounding the child’s experience and the power of meditation.
We also asked several adults, parents and teachers, to try out the app as well. The adults we polled suggested an option for some kind of customization of the duration of children’s meditation sessions and possibly visual and/or ambient music to accompany the meditation sessions. Overall we think that this app would be a good introduction to the world of meditation if a few minor features were tweaked.
