Twice the Fun! – My Caterpillar and The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Friends PLAY & EXPLORE
Take care of your very own caterpillar until he is ready to become a beautiful butterfly! As his guardian, you will feed him delicious fruit from the trees, make sure he has some fun along the way with the toys, visits duck friends in the pond, takes care of his watering chore and gets enough sleep. The user will go through the cycle of feeding, playing, visiting and completing the watering chore before the Very Hungry Caterpillar is ready to sleep. This app allows for wonderful vocabulary development used along side of an adult (ripe fruit, sleeping, playing, bouncing, popping, sailing, eating, crawling).
We love the fact that in My Caterpillar, the app stresses movement and play as an essential activity as well as the importance of sleep. As the caterpillar grows, so do the things he interacts with, i.e. he acquires more toys and a broader variety of foods to eat. Here the routines are predictable but change slightly and depict that things do indeed evolve. And this is so important to kids at this age, who sometimes balk at new foods or activities.” Be sure he gets plenty of time eating and playing by filling up the ‘bar’ at the top of the screen before you move on to the next activity. Once the caterpillar experiences metamorphosis into a butterfly, you see the life cycle begin again. This time, the new caterpillar is accompanied by the beautiful butterfly and you’ll see him flying in the background, collect butterflies as you complete the cycle over and over again. Pairing this with the story would be a wonderful extension to reinforce the concepts from the book.
This interactive app is extremely simple to use with just a drag and tap of your finger and offers effortless playtime with Eric Carle’s famous caterpillar. The bubbles were a favorite, and help teach beginning iPad skills of targeting, dragging and dropping items. It also brings into play the concepts of time and space in an organized sequential manner. The 3D technology is fun to interact with and will bring smiles to little ones…. and big ones too!
