Wanderful, Inc. has received the prestigious Editor’s Choice Award from Children’s Technology Review for its interactive storybook, Ruff’s Bone. Ruff’s Bone 1.1 is the eighth title, originally published by Living Books but enhanced and updated for iOS devices by Wanderful, and the third of these titles to receive the coveted Editor’s Choice Award.
Children’s Technology Review honored Ruff’s Bone in its May 2013 issue. Reviews measure ease of use for children, educational value, entertainment value, design features and overall product value. Ruff’s Bone received a rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars. The review said Ruff’s Bone “is a good book meets solid interactive design, in this updated iPad edition of the classic Living Book.”
The interactive story tells the tale of Ruff who eagerly awaits his Sunday bone given to him each week by his master, who throws it for Ruff to fetch. In searching for his bone, Ruff visits 12 pages each containing an exotic location filled with objects that are fun and entertaining to interact with. This includes a trip into a dark sky and a hunt on the moon to find it. His determined search leads us down a deep, dark hole, into a cave, high up into the clouds, to the bottom of the ocean and even up a ladder to another planet before Ruff finally finds his way home – with his bone.
“We are thrilled that Wanderful has been honored with the Children’s Technology Review Editor’s Choice Award” said Mickey W. Mantle, Chief Executive Officer at Wanderful. We are especially pleased to receive our third of these wards for Ruff’s Bone, in addition to the awards we previously received for Arthur’s Teacher Trouble and Harry and the Haunted House. Plus we were pleased that CTR recommended Wanderful’s Tortoise and the Hare app as well.”
Ruff’s Bone was written by Oscar-nominated Eli Noyes, whose work includes projects for Sesame Street, HBO, Scholastic, Nickelodeon, MTV, Pixar, Disney and Oxygen Media.
As with other Wanderful interactive storybooks, Ruff’s Bone comes in English and Spanish, with a 66 page Classroom Activities guide. The Classroom Activities guide is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and made available to teachers to help them integrate the App into their teaching curricula.

Originally introduced in 1992 by Broderbund Software, Living Books were the industry’s first highly interactive storybooks that were embraced by educators, praised by parents and cherished by children. Twenty years later, Wanderful CEO Mickey W. Mantle (who as Broderbund CTO oversaw the technology development of Living Books) has assembled key members of the original team, including Living Books creator Mark Schlichting, to re-invent the wildly popular interactive storybooks. The team has built an entirely new multi-platform engine to drive the story experience on the latest tablets, phones and computers, resulting in interactive storybook apps designed to meet the high standards of today’s generation of digital kids and provide educational and production values that are not seen in Apps today (including original music produced by professional musicians, professional voice talent, plus animation and sound effects rivaling movie studio productions).
