Social Detective Intermediate by Social Skill Builder, Inc. is a follow-up app to their outstanding Social Detective Beginner app. This intermediate app supports the foundational content of the first app and extends on the concepts involving everyday social interactions. Both apps are based on the graphic novel entitled, You are a Social Detective by Social Thinking. The genius behind this app is that it incorporates real-life videos where the applicability is immediately useful – fresh from the classroom or therapy clinic. Using videos of peers improves decoding skills so that kids can make “Smart Guesses” – by employing the “Smart Detective Tools“, and ultimately rise to the level of becoming a “Social Thinker” and maintain awareness of the people around us.
Included are Notebook Exercises to assist in writing down observations and thoughts about emotions and the fun Flashlight Exercises where you get to test out all your hypotheses on an interaction and predict what may happen next.
Inside the App
On opening, select your Avatar, and then get acquainted with what to do. I love how they give concrete examples of using what you see hear and or feel during a situation to make a “Smart Guess” to come up with a plan of action. By taking quizzes and decoding the messages and feelings that are happening to the people on the video screen, you can earn the tools of a social detective – a notebook and flashlight.
The intermediate app can be used alone, however, when paired with the Social Detective Beginning app, clinicians, parents, and teachers have all the necessary tools in one place. There are 42 questions in both the detective book and the detective’s flashlight category – totaling 84 altogether. When doing a few videos at a time, it really gives kids the opportunity to then practice the skills and come back with any questions. And that will also help integrate the material into real time use. This app is a TWA Top Pick and one to place in any clinician’s toolbox. It would be fun to do on a big screen and take turns answering and discussing the questions.
