TallyTots, by Spinlight Studio, is a simple yet invaluable learning app to teach youngsters number concepts. The intent of the app is to teach your child number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, and how to count to 20 – all while having a delightful time. When the app starts, you are taken to a screen that has all 20 numbers. Your child chooses the number they want and the counting begins. Each number is outlined as it is counted up the number line. This enables the child to watch the progression of numbers as it is counting up to the number they selected. Once the count is finished, your child is given an activity that corresponds to that number. This is when the real fun begins; each number has a corresponding group of well-chosen things to count. Spinlight Studio has demonstrated wonderful creativity in the diversity of the items to count, and entertain, with lively animated activities. This keeps the kids engaged and has them returning over and over again. Some of the brilliant activities include lighting one light bulb, racing two cars around the track, blowing bubbles of six different colors, cleaning up twelve toys, and exploring using a magnifying glass to enlarge fourteen cupcakes to see their unique decorations. Two of our favorites (without giving all the surprises away) are cracking thirteen eggs to expose little chirping chicks and the chipmunk stuffing nineteen acorns into his mouth. Priceless!
The navigation is perfect for younger kids! It’s completely intuitive, with freedom to count in order or jump from number to number. As it counts, each number is flashed on the screen, this ensures both the verbal and visual repetition, and yes parents, the repetition is vital for the exercises to be effective. Wish this app was around when we were teaching struggling pre-k and kindergarten students!
Spinlight Studios, a multi-talented team of designers, writers and other smart folks driven to “design everything”, has delved into the app market. “Officially, the company’s motto is “Design Everything.” But unofficially, the creative team at Spinlight Studio seems to live by another motto — pigeon holes are for pigeons. From product development to retail sales, the innovative design firm has never been afraid to cross the line that separates advertisers from entrepreneurs. And now, they’re doing it again, joining the long list of companies making apps for the Apple iOS.”
