The Chalk Box Story, by Don Freeman and Auryn Inc, is the perfect app to get kids yearning to draw and use their imaginations to create something colorful. This app encourages creativity by guiding kids through encountering a blank page and writing imaginary stories, right on the spot.

In this iPad app, the paper and eight pieces of colored chalk draw a story about a small boy stranded on an island and the adorable turtle who rescues him. True to the original version, which came out in 1976, the blue chalk draws the sky and sea; the yellow chalk draws the sun and sand; the brown, a little boy and two trees; green makes the palm leaves and an adorable over-sized turtle. Now, the purple gives the story some real excitement by drawing the boy a stick. Then, he waves his flag and it all tells a story.  The white chalk draws a flag on the stick and the red writes HELP ME on it! Finally, the black chalk makes a boat off in the distance.

All eight colors used and the boy is still stranded. That is when the artwork itself takes control of the scenario and the story moves along. The adorable turtle beckons the boy to join him for a swim, and they glide off toward the black boat. It has been said that the story grows on you, as you read it. This preschool app has simple and engaging activities for your kids to do to after the stories.
