The four years between 1861 and 1865 was a critical era in the development of the United States. This app covers the divisions between the free North and the slaveholding South, the conflict that erupted into a full-scale war and how eleven southern states seceded from the Union. The Kids Discover app covers this momentous history in the making and engages kids from the first drum roll. Students we worked with were delighted with the diversity of format and the ease of use this app provides. Eight distinct chapters
outline the war. The first two, A Nation Divided
and The Road to War,
describe what led up to the division of states. War! Ordinary Heroes and the Cost of War
portray the differences between the north and south through reenacted battle simulations, photographs, and historic speeches. The chapter on Civil War Notables has a bio appear after tapping each portrait. The last chapters, The Homefront
and a history In Story and Song
, deliver a straight up picture of the destruction the war caused. There are three additional sections that include four cool activities, a quiz and outside links to reputable classroom resources. This type of presentation is far more effective in clarifying these historical events for children than your typical textbook. There is no comparison to this type of virtual learning experience.
Both students and teachers can learn and enjoy history with a better grasp of the context with this Civil War app. We love the timeline in the form of a journal and the portrait gallery with short bio’s describing each distinct individuals role in the war. We highly recommend this app, it is a wonderful introduction, supplement throughout, as well as, a great way to close a unit on the Civil War.
