Earth Day Carol, by Zippy Brain, is an entertaining, informational and cleverly recycled story that retells the important message of the 3R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle in a most unusual way. In this retelling, Earth Day Carol is based on the Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol; a story that has been retold over and over in many different ways to many generations each year around the Christmas holiday! The writer, illustrators, and developers of this app have creatively reused the story of a Christmas Carol with the main characters of Scrooge and the Ghosts of Past, Present, and Future and recycled them into a tale that teaches a lesson about the importance of environmental responsibility. I found Earth Day Carol to be humorous and quite corny, but in a very serious way about a very serious issue! Almost everyone knows the story of Scrooge and Christmas Past, Present and Future! It just so happens that this year in December the third-grade teachers in my elementary school took our students on a field trip to a theater to see a live performance of this classic tale. So I can say with confidence that almost all of our third graders know the story of A Christmas Carol. I am so excited to now show them this Earth Day Carol app on Earth Day! I can't wait to see and hear their reaction to this Earth Day Carol app when they are now introduced to Plastic Bottle Scrooge who is visited and haunted by the Ghosts of Plastic Past, Plastic Present and Plastic Future. I especially like the option of having the choice to have the story read to them by the narrator or to have them read it to themselves. I haven't decided which option I will choose first yet (it all depends on time constraints, ideally I would like to do both options). This reading feature also allows the app to be an entertaining and adventurous exploration for all ages. This FREE app includes: Fun interactions Animations Pop-up facts ( 50+ science and environmental touch screen facts) Full-color illustrations Most importantly I want to utilize this app to teach my students the message behind the purpose of Earth Day; which I believe is to intrinsically motivate every human inhabitant of our planet to become involved in protecting it! "Earth Day was started in 1970 to set aside a day to appreciate and become aware of the environment. We don’t have to wait until April 22nd to celebrate Earth. Every day, we can reduce, reuse, and recycle." I know Earth Day Carol app will truly be the motivator I am looking for to assist me in instilling this philosophy in my third-grade students! Just like Plastic Bottle Scrooge, each of us can make a difference by using good judgment when we buy and discards things! When we reduce, reuse, and recycle, we: Save natural resources, save space in our landfills, save energy, reduce pollution and save money. Now, who doesn't want to do that? Have fun sharing this truly creative app with your students, friends, and family. In doing so you will become a successful part of the process in spreading this important message of the 3R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
