Profile of Phonological Awareness, by Smarty Ears, is a great tool for speech implementers, interventionists, reading and classroom teachers. The opening screen allows the teacher to add individual students or a group. The info button describes the activity and what to say, allowing for fidelity of the test. Notes can be added from the drop-down menu to help identify the student's patterns. Each area also describes the discontinue point. Six different areas are assessed including rhyming, blending, isolating, deleting, segmenting, and substituting sounds. In sum, there exist many ways to improve a student's speech-language development.
General test observations can also be noted. The test then is scored by three tiers of colors, making it easy for the teacher to make intervention decisions. These results can be emailed or printed. On the dashboard screen, a manual is available, video tutorials, as well as an explanation of the program. There is even a caution for skills that may not be obtained yet, due to a student's grade level. This would be a wonderful addition to a teacher's toolbox, that will create assessment data without fuss and can be shared. The price of this app is $29.99 and will be used again and again for great decisions for intervention.
