BEST Baby & Toddler Apps

We are very excited to share our BEST Baby & Toddler Apps for making the most of your young children's time on devices We asked our readers to submit their favorite apps for the baby/toddler set. We got busy doing some serious field testing with children two and under. Once again, were amazed at the dexterity, the focus, and the definite preferences of this distinct age group. Some of the apps we had already reviewed, some have been in our queue to review and a few are new to us.  TWA realizes that there are many, many wonderful apps designed specifically for the youngest iPad users. Unfortunately, we can't cover them all but please enjoy this list that proved to be hottest with the tots.

Whether you are a grandparent, parent, teacher, caregiver, or just extremely young at heart, get out your iPad and get busy downloading!

Little Fox Music Box – Kids Songs – Sing along, by Fox & Sheep. We
admin-aja175 reviewed this app and thought that the audience appeal would be for 2 and older. The first thing we said in our review was "“WOW-O-WOW!” This app not only offers songs but a musical “play space” for each. It features adorable, detailed illustrations, high-quality music that never misses a beat and the most delightful sound effects ever experienced in an app. The animations are also top-notch and state-of-the-art, which will keep audiences engaged for hours and hours. This is an app that will have a place on your iPad, starting with the tots right through the primary grades. Read our review
Worth noting* their Nighty Night is also a terrific app - the perfect calming bedtime story, where the child turns the lights out in every room in the house.

Don't Let This Pigeon Run this App! by Mo Willems and Disney, lets you create your own Pigeon stories with your pal, Mo Willems. Just follow, as the Bus Driver asks for your ideas—then shake the Pigeon. Your story is ready! Sit back and enjoy the show. Once you’re finished, try again…and again. You can make as many silly stories as you want. This fully animated app includes hilarious shake-and-play technology, customized voice integration, and other exciting interactive features. Plus, tots can draw the Pigeon with Mo.

BOB Books - Reading Magic HD, by Learning Touch - These products follow the same method and principles as the #1 bestselling Bob Books series. Bob Books were created to lead to the ah-ha moment when letters first turn into words. By slowly introducing new letter sounds, using consistency, repetition, and stories that fit short attention spans, your child will quickly find his or her own ah-ha moment. This is the reading magic of Bob Books. Soon your child will join over 3 million children who can proudly say, “I read the whole book!” We thought this group was a bit young to be concerned with reading skills, but we learned tots know a good thing when they see it!

ABC ZooBorns, by Peapod Labs, is the perfect app for toddlers. It showcases newborn baby animals, from the world’s zoos and aquariums, and teaches through sight, sound and touch. There are over 50 baby animals from all over the world to pick from, with eye-popping pictures and zoo videos that are educational. Toddlers adore exploring the truly exotic world of tiger cubs, penguin chicks, baby giraffes and more, through captivating and interactive scenes. This unique adventure is brought to you through a special collaboration between Peapod Labs' award-winning ABC Series and ZooBorns.com This is one app you will not want to miss sharing with the tots in your life.

Draw and Tell - by Duck Duck Moose supplies the creative outlet for the youngest iPad users. This will keep toddlers engaged and learning while they create their first masterpieces - without the mess! From Children's Technology review, "exciting new creativity app for young children -- the first to successfully mix a full featured drawing program with narration.... In the short history of children's apps, Duck Duck Moose has more than its share of home runs, but this one is the most important."  Tots will get their daily dose of creativity with this awesome app and you'll know that they are in good company.

Pat the Bunny, by Random House Digital, Inc. - This app is a clever re-telling of the well-known children's book by Dorothy Kunhardt. The color, style, and artwork are very similar to the book, and the gentle play that is encouraged also follows the original style. Toddlers will giggle with delight as they play hide and seek with Bunny, pop bubbles in the bathtub, make music in the kitchen, catch butterflies in the garden, and much more.

Plus, on devices with front-facing cameras, kids will be amazed to find they can “look in the mirror” and see their reflection smiling back at them. When TWA first looked at this app we were unsure if justice could be done to this classic on the iPad, but it didn't take long for the tots to convince us otherwise.

The “Punky Dunk Project” is my 3-year-old’s current favorite. Super sweet and charming, she chooses this one for her bedtime story at least two nights out of the week. I like it too, so that’s two recommendations. Thanks, Punky!
