The Facebook Controversy ~ Educational Sector Responds

Screen Shot 2018-04-10 at 10.23.03 PM

Last week for EdAppTalk we discussed the controversy surrounding Facebook and all of the issues that have surfaced. It was announced that initial figures estimating Facebook breached personal data on 50 million users, was incorrect and it was closer to 87 million, and all without direct consent!

The famed social media company has been involved in a number of scandals over the last several weeks. Here’s a list of Facebook’s ongoing dilemmas:

  • Cambridge Analytica

  • Retaining users’ deleted videos

  • Internal political struggles

  • Russia meddling and “fake news”

  • Public profiles being scrapped

  • Secret deletion of Zuckerberg’s messages

  • Photo and link scans over Messenger

  • Spreading hate speech in Myanmar

Would you give up your Facebook Account to make a statement?

The following is an abridged version of our EAT chat, we would love to hear your thoughts on this HOT topic, please comment below!

Jayne Clare
Jayne Clare Let's use this thread for our Facebook EAT Chat, welcome to one and all for joining in! Thoughts on Facebook and the recent scandals that are plaguing them?
Jo Booth Irmgard Raubenheimer  Mary Jane CowardYevel Belyavskiy
Jo Booth So what do you all think?
Jackie Bryla
Jackie Bryla I’m keeping my Facebook acct !
Jayne Clare
Jayne Clare I have to admit in all honesty I could get by without Facebook, anyone with me?
Laura Griffith
Laura Griffith I'm mad at Cambridge Analytica, not Facebook. I will continue using FB and continue not putting any information on it that I care about people having. I worry that people will switch to other social media platforms not realizing that they have FEWER regulations. Just because there hasn't been a problem yet doesn't mean it's better.
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Where's Will Farrell?

Here’s Will Ferrell’s post about

DZdFA4ZUMAE-CfC

Jo Booth
Jo Booth I think I probably will too, I think most people naturally stop using a lot of social media over time.
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy - JayneJoJackieMary Jane, I am also keeping my account. I wonder, if there would be some replacement - then it is the different issue. The FB is very important for me.
Irmgard Raubenheimer
Irmgard Raubenheimer Very interesting topic, but like everything out there is it not important to take control of our own actions, and be accountable for ourselves. If we delete or get rid of everything that is not the truth, or has some twisted truths we will have to get a rid of a lot of things in our lives. Our job is to make sure what we share are truthful and that we are accountable for our actions.
Joshua Wilson

Joshua Wilson Where would you do the Thursday EAT chat?

Jayne Clare
Jayne Clare Any suggestions?
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy Joshua, you are at the right place.
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson It's very scary because they are selling very personal information about people to anyone
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy Jo, it is maddening me that FB continues to send me posts that I never asked them to be sent. How to get rid off all this stuff? FB MUST stop this at least!
Jackie Bryla
Jackie Bryla I don’t see how data sharing by FB is any different than any other establishment that shares....I don’t agree that it’s right but it’s happening everywhere and I like the benefits of FB. In fact, I would
Not know you guys if it weren’t for Facebook !! 🤔🤣
Jayne Clare
Jayne Clare True that Jackie!
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy Jackie, exactly my point!
Jessica Miller Schulman
Jessica Miller Schulman I feel that Twitter might actually be a good forum for the chats.
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy Jessica, hello! I was participating in a couple of chats on the twitter. Maybe, it was because of my inexperience, but it was less convenient than FB chats /info exchange.
Jessica Miller Schulman
Jessica Miller Schulman Yevel Belyavskiy I'm not all that experienced with Twitter. I do like Facebook, but am uneasy with everything that is happening. My account on Facebook is pretty much locked down, but I know that means nothing when things like this happen.
Joshua Wilson
Twitter is abused by bots but I don't think they have much personal info.
Jessica Miller Schulman
Jessica Miller Schulman I honestly don't use Twitter much, but I have nothing personal on there, so for me, it seems to be a safer platform. There are plenty of bots on Facebook too.
Jo Booth
Jo Booth Good point Jackie, it’s you who puts out what’s on your page!

Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson I have read bad things about Google collecting all your browsing info
Jo Booth
Jo Booth I always find it interesting that whenever my husband or myself do a search for products outside of Facebook, we have items pop up in our newsfeed of what the other was shopping for
Jessica Miller Schulman
Jessica Miller Schulman That bothers me. I don't use Google as my primary search engine now and don't use chrome anymore either.
Jo Booth
Jo Booth why is that? For this reason?
Jessica Miller Schulman
Jessica Miller Schulman A friend told me about duck duck go. I've been searching with it for a little while. It doesn't track your IP address or log data about you.
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson As people become more and more digitally involved this problem can get much worse
Jackie Bryla
Jackie Bryla Think about this...in the past you subscribe to a magazine...say scholastic or Sesame Street.,,.then soon you get reading rainbow and so on....this is the same thing in digital format
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson I read about Facebook trying to get health records... Devos?
Yevel Belyavskiy
 I would not be surprised...
Jo Booth
Jo Booth That would violate HIPPA laws

Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson What is most terrifying is that it looks like bad actors are trying to CHANGE people's behavior and thoughts. If you don't think a targeted post that knows all about you can have a huge impact, you're wrong
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson There would be no advertising if it didn't work
Jo Booth
Jo Booth Great point Joshua, I know I’m susceptible to repeated messages
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson And imagine if they knew everything you like. Or your health and can send you drug ads
Jayne Clare
Jayne Clare I would love a world without advertising
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Well TV got Netflix and DVR
Jayne Clare
Jayne Clare YES! Exactly
Preston Angela Moorad
Preston Angela Moorad I'm keeping my Facebook account but am very careful about the info we share and our privacy settings. Facebook AAC user groups have been a fantastic resource to get help. I can get an answer much quicker there than trying to call tech support at the main AAC companies plus gain the collective insight from a diverse group, often including parents, AAC users themselves and professionals from around the world ~ Angela

Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy Angela, Thank you for coming! Thank you for the info.
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Point is that for most people it would be hard to give up your connections and there really has to be strict privacy laws
Yevel Belyavskiy
Preston Angela Moorad
Preston Angela Moorad Plus I am using Facebook as a means to sell off my huge stash of therapy materials, books, music, toys, etc. as I prepare for retirement in 3 weeks 😎🏔🌲
Jackie Bryla
I’m So excited for you Angela!
Jayne Clare
Jayne Clare You are damned if you do and damned if you don't!
Jo Booth
Jo Booth At home we’ve talked a lot about this...the continued customization of information makes you sloppy and rigid in your thinking, when things weren’t so tailored, at least you were exposed to new thoughts and ideas
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy Jo, I can not agree more, but, would we like or not, this is the current reality.
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Facebook still collected private info and I believe sold it illegally
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy @Joshua, IMHO, you are right.
Jessica Miller Schulman
Jessica Miller Schulman I run a fantastic speech group, I won't be giving up Facebook, but I'm also not posting too much anymore. I keep thinking about deleting all of my pictures and limiting what I participate in or "like" or follow on Facebook.
Jayne Clare
Jayne Clare I have always used Facebook for my work and have not posted anything personal
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson I think the best option is to monitor EVERYTHING very carefully. Your browser, anywhere you use a credit card, even things like Fitbit and (possibly) your microphone. Now I sound like a tinfoil hat person...
Jo Booth
Jo Booth I’ve posted tons of personal stuff - and learned the hard way - not to
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Even doing everything right doesn't mean people can't steal your info from lots of places
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Cambridge Analytica was able to use Facebook to send ads tailored to just one person directly
Jo Booth
Jo Booth I’m not sure I know all the facts or impact this has had
Joshua WilsonJoshua Wilson Very likely stole the election
Jo Booth
Jo Booth I can’t even talk about the election without getting upset...
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson I am obsessed with Twitter as it is a good place to find some good reporting on current things. Just research your sources.
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson The silver lining is that all of this is coming out and hopefully we can stop things in the future
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Even in apps, we were involved with a lobbying organization that created privacy laws. There were none originally
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Even with laws, there had to be someone in charge of oversight and people enforcing bad actors. Enforcing penalties... which also was a challenge
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Enforcing penalties... which also was a challenge
Irmgard Raubenheimer
Irmgard Raubenheimer Is there anything that does not collect your info? It’s kind of a scary world we live in, I guess a person can get very paranoid when you listen to all these stories. Maybe go off the grid 😉.
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy Irmgard, I agree, it is very scary. But, based on my life experience & history knowledge, whatever one person is invented, another person could reinvent...
Irmgard Raubenheimer
Irmgard Raubenheimer yep at the end of the day it all works out and we survive another generation of whatever it is.
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson There should be privacy but companies are not abiding by their own policies in some cases.
Preston Angela Moorad
Preston Angela Moorad Goodnight everyone. Going off the grid now 😉
Irmgard Raubenheimer
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel BelyavskiyAngela, good night, & thank you for your input.

Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson It can and should be used responsibly and can do lots of good unfortunately bad companies or people within them can also do horrible things
Jessica Miller Schulman
Jessica Miller Schulman We won't use any of those devices either. I also don't use Siri.
Rick Buchner
Rick Buchner Your phone is listening all the time even when not being used.
Jessica Miller Schulman
Jessica Miller Schulman I know.😞 But I do need my phone.
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy @Jo, maybe you will laugh, but I am the same...
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Your devices and social media become addictive
Rick Buchner
Rick Buchner The part of all this that makes me most uncomfortable is how many people are only upset when their political opponent uses the same techniques but is ok with their party using it.
Jo Booth
Jo Booth Rick, I think that is a big problem...People’s views are getting so solidified because they are preaching to their own choir and getting constantly reinforced
Rick Buchner
Rick Buchner Jo Booth yes people are looking for fights instead of commonalities in this new space very troubling
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Not getting into politics but no one used stolen data in this way before and if it was working with a foreign power with $, manpower and technological power, that is not only illegal, it is treason
Rick Buchner
Rick Buchner Google and Facebook practically had offices in the white house for the entirety of Obama's terms I doubt they were taking pictures of the evening meals
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy Dear participants! We are all united that the FB must implement the changes. So, do you have proposals how to do it?
Joshua Wilson
Joshua Wilson Ask Alexa?
Rick Buchner
Rick Buchner FB needs people with much more life experience in an ethics board at a bare minimum without political agendas..the problem with that is people with an agenda don't recognize their agenda as such
Yevel Belyavskiy
Yevel Belyavskiy Good night, thank you for coming & for the so interesting chat! There was a lot of new info.
Jayne Clare
Jayne Clare WOW, great turnout tonight! Thanks all for joining in! Since my Facebook is strictly professional and I don't want to lose this group, guess I am staying on ~ Facebook needs to be accountable and admit that HUGE mistakes have been made and need to be rectified.
Eiry Rees Thomas
Eiry Rees Thomas I enjoyed reading all comments about this interesting topic. An in-depth article that I read yesterday concluded that the positives outweigh the negatives. I'd miss my friendships and groups so much, including my wonderful friends across the pond.
Lucas Steuber
Lucas Steuber I wish I could but I’m too involved professionally.
Jayne Clare
Jayne Clare I do hope that Facebook gets the message loud & clear, we deserve respect and privacy!

That's a wrap! Tune in for the next EdAppTalk on Thursday 9:00 EST
