Math tutoring app to subtract a number of ‘Mathxiety’ sufferers
Real life condition ‘mathxiety’ a growing issue of concern across the US
Tutoring app Zapzapmath is aiming to combat ‘mathxiety’ amongst the 50% of children over 5 years of age in the US through gamification and fun puzzles.
‘Mathxiety’ is a condition where people develop math-related anxiety, affecting their ability to learn what already is a difficult subject. It can be defined as ‘feelings of apprehension and increased physiological reactivity when individuals have to manipulate numbers, solve mathematical problems, or when they are exposed to an evaluative situation which deals with mathematics.
Symptoms of ‘Mathxiety’ include:
Unusual nervousness when thinking about or doing math
Lack of confidence in ability
Panic during tests or when being called on to answer questions
A feeling of being alone
A feeling of permanency
Zapzapmath aims to curb the fear child sufferers have with maths through a fun, interactive gaming platform involving puzzles that connect with the school math syllabus tied from Kindergarten level to Grade 6 and Common Core standard. The app uses puzzles and gamification to help young children engage with sums in a fun way and reduces the stress and frustrations of both learning and teaching for kids, parents, and teachers.
Zapzapmath’s growth as a platform for choice by teachers and parents can be seen in the number of downloads it has achieved. Since the apps’ launch in 2015, it has recorded over 2.9 million downloads. Zapzapmath aims to conquer the perception that American kids are bad at maths by helping them improve their skills and by seeing math as a fun subject.
Mathxiety is often developed at an early stage in life with many students believing that they “just can’t do math.”
Most recent figures from Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford Graduate School, Jo Boaler revealed that almost 50 percent of Americans from age 5 up suffer from ‘mathxiety.’ In addition to this, the US has ranked low in math literacy for some time with the latest figures from the 2015 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), indicated that the U.S. ranked 38th out of 71 countries when it came to math and math ability.
Zapzapmath, an app developed for children (K-6) and used by parents and teachers was established in 2015 to make learning math a more enjoyable fearless, educational experience.
