This app is carefully aligned with the new Common Core Curriculum. It can be played in either practice mode or game mode. The game mode is a bingo game, kids read a passage then answer a question about the passage that requires inferential thinking. The ability to connect via Bluetooth gives this app the very awesome feature of being a multiplayer game. You can play against other students if you have access to wifi or any other form of internet.
The topics are all based on the culture of the Incas, Mayas, and Aztecs. Each passage has a hook to grab the reader's attention and keep them engaged. The passages are about 100 words in length and the app offers 3 levels of reading difficulty. This spans from 2.0, second grade - first month to 6.5, sixth grade - fifth month. These differing reading levels give this app a large audience, as well as a long shelf life. Like all the other Minimod apps, Reading for Inferences helps build solid readers. TWA stated in another review that e Skills Learning has a great formula going here and continues to develop excellent educational tools for use at home or in the classroom.
e Skills boasts 30 years of experience in traditional educational publishing. Their intent has always been to develop and publish instructional materials using the latest in mobile technology that challenges and motivate students. They were one of the first app developers to add Teachers Guides and Lesson Plans to their apps. Be aware that some of the images in this app are of mummies... but instead of scaring kids, they will turn them on all the more!
Each eSkills Learning Minimod focuses on a specific Essential Skill helping students master that skill as a foundation for the next skill. Each module also contains supplemental materials with Real World practice. The variety materials were designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of learners and learning styles and to provide for differentiation in skill development as students learn while they play.
