News-O-Matic, Daily Reading for Kids, by Press4Kids, is making a big splash in the device driven, digital news. This much-needed app was just released and we have to say, until now... there wasn’t an app for that. News vetted for children with relevant content, not sensationalized, and geared developmentally for elementary school age children - simply brilliant! This app is going to get lots of use both in the classroom and out. Teachers who cover and/or assign current events are going to love News-0-Matic. Teachers and parents are going to be delighted with the selection and variety of the articles, as well as it’s user-friendly layout. A qualified children’s journalist, with experience in non-fiction text, writes each and every article. Teacher input and an on-staff child psychologist that review all articles before press-time ensure emotionally safe content. One of the things Teachers With Apps is most impressed with is the professionalism and integrity we see in this publication, as well as filling a much-needed void. FYI - the app is updated daily at 3:00 pm so that students can get the latest news after arriving home from school and teachers will have time to prep for the following day as they know what to expect. Speaking of which, teachers can use this app in a myriad of different ways. The first time I used News-o-Matic, I projected the app onto the SMART Board. We viewed it as a small class group and learned how to use the app and take advantage of its many components. We had a discussion about why the different articles were included, what they found most fascinating, and why NEWS is a must as a topic to keep up with. The following day, with a whole new set of articles, we worked with partners taking turns reading their own personal favorites. The students recorded just the facts - Who, What, Where, Why and What Else. After lively conversations and much collaboration, the students verbally presented what they had gleaned from their experiences. Kids responses were thoughtful, they clearly understood the importance of keeping the facts straight. They all had their different favorites, and felt that it was their responsibility to know what was happening in the world, especially since, "Someone might ask us about what is going on and we will know." Each daily issue features:News-O-Matic is the first DAILY paperless newspaper! Five new stories are published each day, covering the latest in world news, science, sports, government, as well as the offbeat stories that all kids love. We got the inside scoop that Press4Kids is planning on reaching out to students to also contribute their own writing, what a FAB idea of having a column of kid reporters! With News-O-Matic, readers will also have access to amazing history timelines, fun news games, interactive maps, and countless other features. NEWS-O-Matic doesn’t run ads, instead, the app is subscription based and controlled by the parent: $1.99 a week, $2.99 a month or $19.99 for an entire year through an in-app purchase.
