I teach in an iPad Lab that services over 700 students in grades K-5 per week. There are many pros about my job, but one major con is headphones, that was the biggest downside until Think Write Headsets were adopted. Headphones are a critical tool for success in my daily life. Through the years, I have tried a variety of types looking for an answer to these problems:
- The cushioning over the ear pieces fall off.
- The cord inside the ear pieces becomes disconnected rendering one or both sides of the headphones useless.

- There was not a microphone attached. As a result, I would purchase cheap earbud sets with microphones. These broke quickly and easily and the quality of the recording was often terrible. Not to mention, it was an additional piece of equipment I had to pass out and pick up at the end of every class.

First, the headband is extremely flexible allowing the children to bend and stretch them as far as their constantly moving bodies want. Next, the earpieces have no pieces to take-off, remove, or destroy. They are permanently attached rendering removal virtually impossible.
Additionally, a microphone connects to each headset. I am no longer tethered to microphones that don’t work and I no longer waste class time managing, organizing, and untangling the cords. Now, when students need to record their voices, they simply reach up and pull the microphone down to their mouths. What’s more, the volume is controlled by a roller switch on the cord of the microphone. Children have stopped yelling at me, “Mrs. Chirhart, my iPad is too loud!” Now, they quickly and easily roll the switch up or down.
The creator of the ThinkWrite Headsets has taken the time to design a headset with children in mind. They even took into account students’ teeth. I realize this is an unlikely thing to consider when designing headphones. However, the designer must have noticed what I constantly see in my classroom. Children love to chew. They chew pencils, crayons, and cords. Headphone cords frequently fall victim to small human teeth. After all, they are located near a child’s mouth, light, easy to move, and a perfect texture for sensory stimulation. In over two months of use, I have only had one headset casualty. While I had a substitute teacher in my room, one of my students tried to rotate the microphone backward resulting in the detachment of the microphone from the headset. Since that time, a demonstration has taken place in each classroom explaining the microphone only turns in one direction--forward.
These headsets have been a singular solution to multiple problems.
