Mathematics and art come together when one starts using the creative drawing app iOrnament. This was a fact for the first release of this app and is, even more, the case for the release of version 1.4.1. Via a 1$ In-App Purchase, the upgrade opens a variety of new features. Many of them are pretty unique and define the ground for a completely new type of drawing experience. The main aim of iOrnament is to transport the message that mathematical structures can at the same time be fun, creative, totally logical, wild, contemplative and inspiring. With your finger, you draw simple strokes on your iPad or iPhone. iOrnament automatically repeats them over and over by reflections, and rotations to form intriguing geometric patterns. On the one hand, the user has full control over the drawing process, on the other hand, he will often be surprised and inspired by surprising coincidences due to the symmetric repetitions.
Over the last few months, iOrnament attracted creative people from all over the world. The related Ornament World Exhibition has in the meantime submissions from more than 30 different countries. According to the independent developer and maths professor Jurgen Richter-Gebert the new version "...is a quantum leap. iOrnament is the first program that allows the intuitive and artistically expressive creation of spherical Ornaments as well as tessellations in the style of the famous prints by M.C. Escher with interlocking patterns of birds, fish or lizards".
The Dutch artist was a constant inspiration for the work of the developer and one of the Richter-Geberts aims is to create an intuitive tool that allows the average user to experiment with such intriguing and mind blowing mosaics, ornaments, and tessellations. User responses concerning the new version are very enthusiastic already on the first day of the release. They reach from a simple "WoW, This is my favorite app of all time...a combined art studio and science lab" via "A beautiful and intelligent way to express oneself artistically through a digital medium" to "Brilliant fun, An excellent app. Fun and habit forming".
The 3D part of iOrnament is based on the theory and symmetry properties of Platonic solids. These are in a sense the most symmetric objects in 3-dimensional space. iOrnament uses their symmetries to create patterns on the surface of a sphere. They are "looking like virtual versions of Japanese Temari Balls" as a user of the associated FaceBook community formulates it. Besides of the mentioned two main new features Version, 1.4.1 of iOrnament contains many improvements like layers, brushes, richer color support and higher resolution of the drawings. Also, the part of the app that contains information on the mathematical backgrounds has been improved and extended by more stunning 3D interactive visualizations.
iOrnament is designed for the iPad as well as for the iPhone. It has an average 4.8 from 5-star rating based on worldwide more than 700 ratings and reviews. It was distinguished with a third place at the 2012 Best App Ever Awards.

Located in Munich, Germany, Science-to-touch was founded in 2012 by Jurgen Richter-Gebert, mathematics professor and expert in geometry and visualization. It is a collection of projects which are aimed at the interactive visualization of science. The basic philosophy behind the project is that visualization and interactivity make science accessible, understandable and fun. The iOrnament App is the first release of Science-to-touch. Science-to-touch tries to provide high-quality content that helps to get in touch with various interesting topics. All projects should be equally creative, informative and accessible.
